By India Today Web Desk: Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has slammed Pat Cummins-led side following Australia’s disappointing day one of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur. After winning the toss, the visitors chose to bat first and were bowled out for 177 runs in the first innings, while India are currently trailing by only 100 runs after making 77/1 at the end of the play.

India captain Rohit Sharma (56 no) belted Cummins for 13 runs off the first over and converted the start into an unbeaten fifty, scoring 56 off 69 deliveries with nine fours and a maximum. Rahul batted for 20 runs off 71 balls before offspinner Murphy took his first test wicket with a simple return catch. Ashwin came out as the nightwatchman with 13 balls remaining.

“Pat Cummins, in particular got nothing out of the surface, nothing through the air. It was tougher to bat against the new ball and those two early wickets, of Khwaja was really one of the setbacks for Australia. Those two ducks and three guys for one(run). That’s what you got to avoid when you play in India,” Hayden said during an interaction on Star Sports.

The visitors’ only pacers are Cummins and Scott Boland, who is playing his first Test outside Australia, with selectors opting for debutant spinner Todd Murphy (1-13) to partner star veteran Nathan Lyon. Hayden tore into the Australian captain for his poor bowling performance, as he finished day one with figures of 0/27 from four overs.

“Pat Cummins, the captain of the side and he bowled rubbish today. He was too full and he didn’t know where he was going with his line and length. If you look at the pitch map, it was way too much that was straying there as well. And it was just a matter of that momentum because Rohit Sharma was standing right at the other end. It does get away from you know,” Hayden added.
