By India Today Web Desk: West Indies dominated proceedings on a rain-marred first day of their opening Test against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Things didn’t change even on the second day as the Caribbean team finished on 221 for the loss of no wickets in 89 overs.
After one and a half sessions on Day 1 were washed off, rain didn’t allow play for the first two sessions on Day 2. In the third and final session, 38 overs took place and the West Indies openers carried on from where they left off.
Both batters were unbeaten on 55 at Stumps on Day 1. Kraigg Brathwaite was the first to get to his hundred off 226 balls. Soon after, Chanderpaul also racked up his maiden Test ton off 286 deliveries.
While his father Shivnarine took eight years and 52 innings to get to his maiden Test hundred, Tagenarine took only five innings.
The southpaw stayed unbeaten on 101 off 291 balls with the help of 10 fours and one six. Brathwaite, on the other hand, stayed not out on 116 off 246 deliveries with seven fours.
Zimbabwe used five bowlers, but none of them threatened to make a breakthrough. Left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza was the most economical bowler as he had figures of 16-6-30-0.
The fast bowling trio of Richard Ngarava, Victor Nyauchi and Brad Evans bowled 54 overs, but couldn’t separate the West Indies opening duo.
With two days already over in the Test, West Indies will be looking to add some quick runs before putting Zimbabwe in to bat first.
