By India Today Web Desk: Australia off-spinner Todd Murphy has downplayed the comparisons with legendary spinner Shane Warne, saying he is not similar to him. On Day 2 of the first match of the Border-Gavaskar series, Murphy became the youngest Australian debutant to pick up a five-wicket haul.
Speaking to Perth Now, Murphy laughed off comparisons to Warne, saying he shook his head when he saw the comparison, adding that he is not similar to the late legend.
“I shook my head when I saw that (comparison), I’m not sure I’m anything similar to Warnie,” Murphy said.
Speaking about his parents, he went on to say that the last few days have been pretty hectic for them. After Murphy made his Test debut, his father made a statement, drawing parallels with arguably the greatest bowler of all-time, leaving his son slightly embarrassed.
“To have them here – it was a pretty hectic couple of days for them to try to get across here, but they’ve been a part of the journey the whole way for me. Being from country Victoria there’s been a lot of hours in the car that they’ve all put in for me to get the opportunities I’ve had. To share the week with them is something we’re going to all remember forever. It’s really special to have them here and they’re all enjoying themselves,” Murphy added.
The 22-year-old said he took confidence from observing and competing with players who had played Test cricket for Australia.
“Being around some of the guys who had played Test cricket, observing everything and competing in the nets and bowling to the Sri Lankans, I took a lot of confidence out of that and reflected and went back, trusted myself a bit more and thought ‘what I’ve got can be good enough’ and believe in that,” said Murphy.
