By India Today Web Desk: India skipper Rohit Sharma showed great composure and delivered a masterclass in controlled aggression to score his maiden Test hundred against Australia in the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Rohit also became the first Indian captain to score centuries in all three formats of the game. Rohit reached the landmark in his third Test as Indian captain and his 46th overall. By reaching the triple-figure mark, he surpassed a feat that even the legendary Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni were unable to achieve despite leading the team in more than 100 matches. Rohit also became India’s tenth captain to score a Test century against Australia. He joined an elite group of superstar batters who have reached the milestone against world cricket’s powerhouses.
India vs Australia, 1st Test Day 2 Updates
Thanks to Rohit’s outstanding batting performance, India managed to keep Australia at bay and take a crucial lead in the first innings. The India captain has now scored his second consecutive century in international cricket, in his first Test since March 2022. Rohit completed his 30th ODI century in his previous appearance for India, against New Zealand on January 24 in Indore.
As he lost his partners at regular intervals, Rohit suppressed his natural instincts and took on the responsibility of halting the Australian charge. It was a stark contrast to how Rohit conducted himself on Day 1 when he faced off against the likes of Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, racing to 56 not out at Stumps.
“Everyone thought pitch was spitting cobras but as always, Rohit made it look like a belt-er. Batted @ImRo45 #INDvAUS #BGT2023,” Jaffer tweeted.
Well played, Skipper. A top quality 100 on a pitch where nobody scored even half of it in the first 4 sessions. ???? #RohitSharma #IndvAus #BGT
