Ashwin on Thursday, dismissed Alex Carey in the 54th over while playing the first Test match in the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy that started from 9 February and will run on till mid-March. The Nagpur pitch offered assistance to the spinners from Day 1, after the SG ball softened up. The off spinner bowled Carey around his legs and broke the partnership with Peter Handscomb that was looking to threaten India.

Ashwin crashed into the stumps of Alex Carey after the batter missed to connect his reverse sweep – in the process getting bowled around his legs.

The Indian pacers found swing with the new ball at the start of the match and removed both openers – Usman Khawaja and David Warner within the first 20 minutes of the play. While Khawaja was trapped by Mohammed Siraj with an inswinger, David Warner’s off stump was uprooted by Mohammed Shami.

Later in the day, Ravindra Jadeja rattled the Australian middle order and picked three crucial wickets of Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Matt Renshaw. At the time of writing, Australia were in 172/6 in 55 overs.
