By India Today Web Desk: Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey expressed his admiration for Virat Kohli and Steve Smith, saying that both star batters have been amazing for the game of cricket and are going to be the key wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Virat Kohli-Steve Smith rivalry is set to resume as India and Australia take on each other in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which begins on February 9 in Nagpur. Regardless of the format, the Kohli versus Smith rivalry is always present when India and Australia meet.
“I think we both know how amazing they’ve been for the game of cricket and for us in Australia. Steve Smith just scored his 30th Test hundred. Last time he batted here in India or all over the world, rates just how good the man is. So, in the changing rooms, we’ll both know that they’re going to be huge wickets. I’m assuming he is going to get out on this tour, but, we’ll understand how big a wicket that is and for that next guy to go in and really go about their business,” Alex Carey told Sportskeeda.
Both Kohli and Smith are among the top ten Border-Gavaskar Trophy run scorers, a list that includes legends Sachin Tendulkar (3264 runs) and Ricky Ponting (3264 runs) (2555 runs). Smith is ranked eighth, with 1742 runs in 14 matches at a stunning average of 72.58, eight hundreds and five fifties, and a best of 192.
“And for us, obviously we want to take that key scalp in Virat but he’s not the only one. But yeah, they’re both two players that you don’t have to say much about. You don’t have to bring it up in a team meeting that he’s the key wicket. Both teams will know that. Yeah, they’re the big dogs of both teams,” Carey added.
While their individual brilliance will be entertaining to watch, Kohli and Smith’s success may have an impact on their respective teams because both are key batters.
