Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Nathan Lyon ready to think outside the box if need arises during Test series in India

By India Today Web Desk: Australia spinner Nathan Lyon is ready to think outside the box if need arises in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy from February 9.

The visiting Australian side is gearing up to face the Indian challenge, having lost the last three Test series to India. Australia also trail India in the head-to-head Border-Gavaskar record.

“I haven’t had the chance to have the better series I guess, and win the series as of yet. That is certainly a goal as the Australian cricket team. But as a senior player, I think for us it’s just about doing the basics. If we do the basics really well and stay in our lane, I think we’ll give our self the best chance to have success,” Lyon said on Star Sports.

“But we also may have to think outside the box in tactics and a way we go about it too. That’s what I love about coming over here, it’s always challenging, it’s always something different happening. The wickets are going to be totally different than what we are used to at home. The crowds obviously a lot different as well. Obviously, they’re all going for India and so it’s pretty amazing to be honest.”

Lyon further said that the Indian team is “full of superstars” and the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara is “exceptional”. The Australian added that Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are quite talented and he is looking forward to competing against them.

“I think it’s too hard to point one out, mate, to be honest. I think you look at the Indian side and it’s full of absolute superstars and we know that as Australian cricketers. You look at the likes of Virat but then you look at Pujara,” said Lyon.

“In my eyes, the way he goes about, rebel cricket is exceptional. It’s really a good lesson for a lot of boys and girls out there on how to play the long format. The talent of Gill and Rahul and Rohit —to be honest, its bloody exciting to be a part of and competing against these guys.”
