By India Today Web Desk: The buzz around the Women’s Premier League auction has reached South Africa, where the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 is going to start on February 10.
While the teams are gearing up for the tournament, the elephant in the room is the auction as it has taken over the minds of women cricketers.
According to reports, the Women’s Premier League auction will take place on February 13 in Mumbai. Ahead of it, Australia captain Meg Lanning said that everyone in her team will deal with the auction as they wish to as there is no right or wrong way to go about it.
Lanning, whose Australia are the defending champions at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, said that the WPL auction is a new experience for women cricketers but they are trying to focus on the tournament in South Africa.
“It’s a new experience for us and at the same time we are focusing on what we’re trying to do here which is the most important thing,” said Lanning at the Captains’ Day in Cape Town.
“There’s no right or wrong way to do that and everyone individually will deal with it as they wish. I think it’s important that you’re always working as a team, but also letting people deal with it how they feel is best.”
Lanning further said that women cricketers are trying to embrace the new opportunities as exciting times are coming up for women cricketers in the Indian league.
“As Sophie (Devine) said, it’s a little bit awkward, but it’s just trying to embrace that and understanding it’s actually a really exciting time and you actually don’t have a lot of control over most of it, so you’ve just got to wait and see. We’re just trying to focus as much as we can on the cricket here, that’s the most important thing,” Lanning said.
