1st Test, Zimbabwe vs West Indies: Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored his maiden Test hundred off 286 balls and conjured praise from West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite.

By India Today Web Desk: West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite heaped praise on Tagenarine Chanderpaul after the latter scored his maiden Test hundred on Sunday, January 5. Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 55 at Stumps on Day 1 and he got his first three-figure score in the purest format off 286 balls.
The visitors finished Day 2 with their score at 221 for no loss in 89 overs after both Chanderpaul and Brathwaite scored centuries. While he had words of praise for his batting partner, Brathwaite was also elated to score his 12th hundred in Test cricket.
“Scoring a Test hundred is a superb feeling, very happy. I think Zimbabwe bowled really well. I don’t think they made it easy at all. Today, the ball was moving around a bit. I think we went about our work really well,” Brathwaite was quoted as saying after the day’s play.
“Credits to Tagenarine (Chanderpaul), he was fantastic. I see him progressing to be a top opener, he’s world class. I’m glad we got some big partnerships and we just have to continue,” he stated.
The third and most part of the second session on Day 1 couldn’t take place due to rain. The first two sessions on Day 2 also couldn’t take place because of a wet outfield and indifferent weather.
Having played at a steady pace thus far, Brathwaite talked about upping the ante on Day 3 and getting quick runs before putting Zimbabwe in to bat at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
“Losing more than a whole day is a lot of time. We surely need to make up tomorrow and score quicker so that we can take 20 Zimbabwean wickets,” he added.
Chanderpaul took only five innings to rack up his maiden Test hundred. His father, Shivnarine, on the other hand, took nearly eight years and 52 innings to get his first three-figure Test score.
